چکیده

In this paper, we describe system-level optimizations for the Execution Migration Machine (EM2), a novel shared-memory architecture to address the memory wall and scalability issues for large-scale multicores. In EM2, data is never replicated and threads always migrate to the core where data is statically stored. This enables EM2 not only to provide cache coherence without any complex protocols or expensive directories, but also to better utilize on-chip cache and thus experience much lower cache miss rate. However, it may incur significant execution migrations for shared data, which increases memory latency and network traffic, and thus, keeping migration rates low is a key under EM2. We present systematic application optimization techniques to address this problem for EM2 suitable for a compiler/OS implementation. Applying these optimizations manually to parallel benchmarks from the SPLASH-2 suite, we dramatically reduce the average migration rate for EM2 by 53%, which directly improves parallel completion time by 34% on average. This allows EM2 to perform competitively compared to a traditional cache-coherent architecture, on a conventional electrical network.

EM2: A Scalable Shared-Memory Multicore Architecture

We introduce the Execution Migration Machine (EM2), a novel, scalable shared-memory architecture for large-scale multicores constrained by off-chip memory bandwidth. EM2 reduces cache miss rates, and consequently off-chip memory usage, by permitting only one copy of data to be stored anywhere in the system: when a thread wishes to access an address not locally cached on the core it is executing...

Analytical evaluation of an innovative decision-making algorithm for VM live migration

In order to achieve the virtual machines live migration, the two "pre-copy" and "post-copy" strategies are presented. Each of these strategies, depending on the operating conditions of the machine, may perform better than the other. In this article, a new algorithm is presented that automatically decides how the virtual machine live migration takes place. In this approach, the virtual machine m...

Optimizing Java bytecodes

We have developed a research compiler for Java class files. The compiler, which we call Briki, is designed to test new compilation techniques. We focus on optimizations which are only possible or much easier to perform on a high-level intermediate representation. We have designed such a representation, JavaIR, and have written a front-end which recovers high-level structure from the information...

Techniques for Reducing the Down Time during Virtual Machine Migration: Resource Failure & Live Migration Circumstances

Virtual Machines need migration from the present host to an another appropriate one due to error in the present hardware or presently loaded scenario causing slowness of execution. Most of the situations fall into second category leading to a solution called live migration. Here, in live migration the virtual machine runs for sometime on the present host while its required data gets transferred...

Partial Redundancy Elimination for Access Path Expressions

Pointer traversals pose significant overhead to the execution of object-oriented programs, since every access to an object’s state requires a pointer dereference. Eliminating redundant pointer traversals reduces both instructions executed as well as redundant memory accesses to relieve pressure on the memory subsystem. We describe an approach to elimination of redundant access expressions that ...
